Guests may wish to hire a guide, rent a boat and motor, or bring their own boat. Some like to mix it up.

Guides

Wheaton's guides are top shelf, and form part of the mystique and tradition at this camp. They are held to rigorous standards, even within the strong Down East guide tradition.

Guides are at your service by the day or for your entire trip. They fish out of the famous 20-foot square stern canoes known as Grand Lakers that are a tradition in these parts. They are comfortable and stable. The canoes are trailered, and provide exceptional mobility to fish the many lakes in the area. Guides can handle up to two adults.

Your guide will cook a memorable shore lunch at midday at some secluded campsite. A typical lunch includes steaks or chops or chicken, potatoes and onions, a fresh pot of coffee, and the fish you catch in the morning--plus homemade pie and cookies from the lodge kitchen. Most of our fish are released, but we still like to grill a fresh salmon or fry some fillets.

Our boats are 14-foot Sea Nymph and Starcraft deep-hull aluminum boats with new model 8-15HP Johnson and Honda outboards. Most boats are fitted with two swivel seats and backs. Each boat is cleaned and fueled daily; and is provided with life vests, cushions, paddles, net, and anchor. If you need something, we'll lend it to you.

Bring Your Own

You are welcome to bring your own boat and motor, which can be launched at the lodge at no charge and secured in the evening at the lakeshore without having to reload. Each of the outlying lakes also have small boat launches, although some of these are shallow and not accessible to big boats when summer lake levels drop.

In the fall of 1999, we constructed a new boat cove to provide sheltered dockage for all watercraft and safe loading for passengers. The facility is expecially useful to elderly and handicapped folks, avoiding the hazard of wind and waves. We have gas (89 octane) and outboard motor oil available at camp. We also sell bait in season, and have a 115 v. outlet near the lakeshore for recharging batteries.
