Family Vacations

The best time to bring younger people to Wheaton's is July and August, for several reasons. First, the lakes have warmed up enough for good swimming. Second, most of the flies are long gone. Third, lots of different fish are biting, and live bait fishing makes the bass and perch accessible to everyone, regardless of skill. Fourth, there are nice day trips available. And finally, our family rates make your trip more affordable.

Our guides are accustomed to working with families and will provide ideas for getting everyone involved in the day's outing. For example, you may have a young person who is not up for a whole day of fishing, even though Dad is. Or maybe Mom would like to join the family for the guide's cook-out but "spare me the fishing!" We are just people, like you are, and understand your situation is special.

There is lots to do around camp, and this is described elsewhere. You can also hike or bike, or perhaps tube the stream.

Guests who wish to take a break from fishing have a number of interesting places to visit within easy driving distance. King's Landing on the St. John River (1 1/2 hours) in neighboring New Brunswick is an extensive historical village depicting life in the Loyalist era. Woolastook Park is in the same area. Campobello Island and FDR's summer retreat, the quaint coastal towns of Eastport, Maine, and St. Andrews, N.B., are all less than two hours away.

Fifty miles to our south is the village of Grand Lake Stream, where the famous Grand Lake canoes originated in the 1920s. While there, you may visit the historical museum, take a tour of the state salmon hatchery, or cast the pools of the stream from which the village takes its name.
